Challenges for State-Owned Enterprises are Increasing in Severity

JAKARTA (ANTARA News) – State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) are facing increasingly severe challenges, according to Minister of BUMN Dahlan Iskan. On Tuesday in Jakarta, Dahlan gathered the boards of directors and commissioners from 141 BUMN to gain insights from Ary Ginanjar Agustian, founder of Emotional Spiritual Quotient (ESQ), under the theme “Towards High-Performing BUMN Through Building a Work Culture.”

“Currently, BUMN are facing growing challenges that require a practical, efficient, and value-based mindset,” Dahlan said in his address.

His lecture covered five main points: the current challenges faced by BUMN, the importance of work culture development in BUMN, accelerated culture transformation (ACT) in BUMN, the stages of accelerated culture transformation, and culture-building partnerships.

He explained that BUMN are now confronted with a continuously changing environment and ever-increasing demands. The former President Director of PT PLN noted that several external factors affecting BUMN include heightened competition, increased customer expectations, and the rapid pace of technological development.

“In order to achieve high performance, BUMN must discover new ways of thinking, new perspectives, and new rules through a transformation,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Ary Ginanjar explained that there are two types of transformation that BUMN must undergo: cultural transformation and business transformation. Cultural transformation is based on vision, mission, values, and the significance of change, whereas business transformation encompasses strategy, structure, and management.

“With these transformations, the performance of the companies will improve because there will be a change in leadership or ‘change leaders,’” Ginanjar said.

He emphasized that leaders of BUMN must possess integrity and honesty, be enthusiastic, spirited, and professional. “The leaders of BUMN must serve as role models for the company’s values,” he added.

He further stated that leaders must maintain systems by prioritizing honesty, upholding company values and regulations, and consistently demonstrating the courage to take responsibility and think ahead.
