Garut, Indonesia – As one of Indonesia’s key agricultural regions, Garut holds immense potential in agribusiness. To maximize the contribution of the agricultural sector, PT Jamkrindo has launched a community empowerment program, providing training on planting techniques and fertilization to local farmer groups in Sumurkondang Village, Cibatu District. The initiative was marked by the inaugural planting of ginger, carried out by Bungarungkup Farmer Group and Dukuh Lestari Farmer Group on Friday, November 5, 2021.
The event was attended by various government and institutional representatives, including: Garut Regent’s representative, Suhartono (Head of Garut’s Cooperatives and MSME Office), Supervisory Board of Salarea Wanatani Lestari Cooperative, Toto P , Founder of Salarea Foundation, Dadan M. Ramdan, PT Jamkrindo’s Corporate Secretary, Abdul Bari, AVP Retail Management of PT Pupuk Kujang, HIPMI BPC Garut’s General Secretary, Representatives from Perhutani, Kodim, and the local police, Coffee and ginger farmers, waste bank activists, and local community members
In a separate statement, PT Jamkrindo’s President Director, Putrama Wahju Setyawan, highlighted the company’s commitment to strengthening Garut’s agricultural economy. Since early 2021, Jamkrindo has collaborated with multiple stakeholders, including the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, the Ministry of SOEs, local governments, IFG, Salarea Foundation, and community leaders, to develop sustainable farming programs.
"We have been actively assisting farmer groups through various initiatives, such as coffee demonstration plots, nursery programs, and the establishment of farmer cooperatives. These efforts are aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and improving farmers' welfare," Putrama explained.
The ginger farmers participating in this program were previously part of Jamkrindo’s coffee farming assistance program. To maximize land productivity, farmers are now utilizing an intercropping system, planting ginger alongside coffee crops in demonstration plots.
“This system is expected to yield around 1.5 tons of ginger, providing farmers with an additional source of income while optimizing land usage,” Putrama added.
Beyond supporting farmers, Jamkrindo has also facilitated the establishment of Salarea Waste Bank, which currently operates in three locations: Cikoang and Loji, Cibatu District, Pasir Waru, Limbangan District
Additionally, in collaboration with Salarea Foundation, Jamkrindo has launched a nursery program for strawberries, coffee, and conservation plants such as coconut and bamboo. These efforts are designed to promote sustainable farming practices while strengthening local economies.
Before implementing this program in Garut, Jamkrindo had already applied a community-based empowerment model in several other regions, including: Ciletuh Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark (CPUGGp), Larantuka, East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Kintamani, Bali
These initiatives have successfully boosted local economies and improved community welfare, serving as a model for sustainable economic development.
“We are committed to continuously supporting community-driven economic empowerment programs. Our initiative in Garut is part of Jamkrindo’s Creating Shared Value (CSV) program, aimed at achieving sustainable development goals,” Putrama stated.
As part of its economic empowerment efforts, Jamkrindo also conducted a socialization program on micro and small business financing, providing: Funding assistance through loan distribution, Business mentoring and training, Enterprise development support under the company’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program
