Commercial banks disburse Rp906 trillion in MSME loans

JAKARTA: The disbursement of micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) loans by commercial banks reached Rp906.54 trillion as of November, marking an increase of approximately 25.07% compared to the same period in 2009.

According to banking statistics released by Bank Indonesia (BI), MSME loan disbursement in November increased by Rp13.12 trillion from the previous month's position of Rp893.42 trillion. This loan segment accounted for 53.12% of the total commercial bank financing, which stood at Rp1.706.4 trillion.

BI defines MSME loans as those with a ceiling of up to Rp5 billion, categorized into:

  • Micro loans: Up to Rp50 million
  • Small loans: Between Rp50 million and Rp500 million
  • Medium loans: Between Rp500 million and Rp5 billion

The report also highlighted that MSME loans were allocated to:

  • Consumer loans: Rp477.91 trillion
  • Working capital loans: Rp346 trillion
  • Investment loans: Rp82.62 trillion

In terms of providers, MSME financing is still dominated by private national banks with Rp395.91 trillion and state-owned banks with Rp334.09 trillion. The remainder was distributed by regional development banks (BPD), foreign banks, and joint-venture banks.

Regarding non-performing loans (NPLs) for MSME financing as of November, the report stated that they amounted to Rp26.62 trillion, or 2.93% of total MSME loans.

Since the government began guaranteeing People’s Business Credit (KUR) through PT Askrindo and Perum Jamkrindo, the disbursement of micro and small loans—part of the MSME sector—has surged.

In fact, three state-owned banks—PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) Tbk, PT Bank Mandiri Tbk, and PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) Tbk—exceeded their KUR disbursement targets for 2010.

  • BRI Corporate Secretary Muhammad Ali reported that KUR disbursement reached Rp9.88 trillion, equivalent to 114.88% of the government’s target of Rp8.6 trillion.
  • Mandiri Commercial & Business Banking Director Sunarso stated that Mandiri’s KUR disbursement totaled Rp2.1 trillion, or 113.82% of the government’s target.
  • BNI Small Business General Manager Slamet Djumantoro noted that BNI’s KUR disbursement in 2010 reached Rp1.63 trillion.
